Information for Directors and Musical Directors
Directors (Musical and Overall)
GGSS often hires professional directors and musical directors for its musicals and seeks volunteer members for its plays, but this is not always the case. In either scenario, directors are selected through an application process, which may involve an interview, conducted by a hiring committee either made up of Board members or selected by the Board. The application typically involves submission of a resume, a cover letter, a list of references, and an artistic proposal. The specific details of the hiring process are advertised with specifics for each show.
Directors are hired for the run of the show and are required to sign a contract with Georgetown University Law Center. They are expected to attend production meetings, help conduct auditions, support the creation of a rehearsal schedule, and partner with the stage manager in running reasonable, organized, and efficient rehearsals. Music directors are generally expected to oversee the music-side of rehearsals, work with performers on improvement, and oversee the recruitment of a band/ensemble with the help of the Board. All directors are also expected to remain within set rehearsal schedules. Directors may be compensated in a flat, lump-sum payment, which is determined prior to hiring.
Directors are expected to abide by the guidelines laid out in GGSS's Constitution and bylaws (relevant details included below). Please review these policies before applying for a position with GGSS, and if you do not feel you can abide by these guidelines, please do not apply to be a director.
Our Purpose and Creed
The Georgetown Gilbert & Sullivan Society performs a great service to the Georgetown Law Center: We give law students and lawyers an outlet for their creative energies and talents. Our goals are to inject fun and creativity into the lives of usually very focused students, faculty members, and alumni. To further that objective, you will find our policies and decisions are guided by three objectives:
HAVE FUN. Even though what we do is often hard work, theater is still recreation for the majority of our members. We try to keep it that way as much as possible.
BE INCLUSIVE. GGSS prides itself on the diversity of its members and talent. It is what makes our theater group unique and interesting. We do our best to include everyone who wants to participate.
PUT ON A GOOD SHOW. This group is all about having fun and providing a creative outlet, but we also want to bring joy to our audience members! Our theater group is all about putting our best foot forward and improving on ourselves. Our group has been highlighted in theatrical reviews before becuase of some amazing shows we've put on. We strive to be the best we can be, but we also strive to never sacrifice our first two objectives.
GGSS is run by an elected Board of Directors. All board members serve for one year term, but have the possibility of re-election. Most Board members must be Georgetown law students with the exception of a single alumni representative, who must be an alumni of Georgetown Law and GGSS. The Board manages day to day operations of the group and also vote on major issues and decisions. The Board of Directors will serve as a producer of the show and will work with directors on specific issues and decisions. Directors will regularly work with various members of the Board, but there will be a specific Board liaison who will act as a connection point between the directors and the Board. The Board members rely on the directorial staff for artistic input and direction, but in the event of a dispute, final decisions will be made by a Board vote.
GGSS shows are cast through a traditional audition process. Auditions are open to Georgetown Law students, faculty, staff, alumni, and to any interested members of the community at large. Although directors are given wide latitude as to how to conduct auditions, they must select their cast in accordance with a number of policies.
Prior to auditions, the Board will designate a list of “lead” roles for a given show. These roles must be cast as follows:
No one may be cast in a designated role without going through the formal audition process.
At least half of the designated roles must be given to current Georgetown Law students.
The remaining designated roles may be freely awarded to current Georgetown Law students, faculty, and staff. They may also be freely awarded to any “active member” of the group. The Board can guide you through the process by indicating who is eligible.
Everyone who auditions for a musical or operetta production must be offered, at minimum, a part in the chorus/ensemble, to the extent that such parts are available.
The Board may dictate additional requirements on a show-by-show basis—for example, that certain roles must be cross-cast. Directors are expected to cast the show in accordance with any such limitations.
Please understand that these rules are necessary to achieve our group’s institutional priorities and to adhere to Georgetown University Law Center administration policies, thereby guaranteeing our eligibility to use GULC facilities and apply for funding as a student organization.
GGSS generally plans its first read-through of a show immediately following auditions, with rehearsals starting immediately after that. The directorial staff will meet with the production team at a time prior to auditions to outline a rehearsal schedule. Directors should expect to make rehearsals run 7:00-10:00 pm M-F for the weeks prior to the show, although weekend rehearsals or other rehearsal times may happen. We try to limit lead roles to rehearse 4 nights a week; and chorus members to 3 nights a week for the first few weeks. The last 2 weeks before the show, the full cast may be called every night. We recommend to the directors to schedule musical rehearsals for the full cast on Fridays, since every Friday of rehearsals GGSS holds a party afterward. GGSS also hosts a party after every show during show week. Directors are, of course, welcome to join these parties!
