FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. What is the Georgetown Gilbert and Sullivan Society?
The Georgetown Gilbert and Sullivan Society is a student organization of Georgetown University Law Center that has been putting on shows for over forty years. Last season, we had more than fifty active members, including law students, school staff, alumni, and community members. GGSS typically produces three shows during the academic year - a Broadway musical in the fall, a (student-directed) play in the winter, and a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta in the spring. We are funded almost entirely through the student government of the Law Center, known as the Student Bar Association (SBA) and led by our Board of Directors. The proceeds that are taken in from ticket sales and concessions, as well as alumni donations, are used to enhance our student budget and make capital investments.
Q. But this is Law School, why a theater group?
The Georgetown Gilbert and Sullivan Society performs a great service to the Georgetown University Law Center community. We give law students, alumni, and faculty an outlet for their creative energies and talents. Whether they take center stage, run a spotlight, paint a flat, or play in the orchestra, few who come into our family are unchanged by their experience. We provide an opportunity for people to get involved in just about any aspect of theater they might be interested in, from acting to singing to dancing to hanging from scaffolding to painting to enjoying cast parties. At the end of every production, most members feel like they have found a second family in the group.
Q. Hmm.. That does sound fun! How do I join?!
It's pretty easy - just come by and hang out with us. Auditions for our first show of the year are typically at the beginning of the semester and are open to anyone, no matter what your level of experience. We try to cast everyone who auditions for our Fall and Spring shows, so there is no way you will be left out if you want to be on stage. If behind-the-scenes is more your thing, new techies, designers, and stage crew are always welcome. We usually do tech on the weekends (stage building, painting, costumes, lights, props, etc) and you are welcome to drop in and help out! Drop us an e-mail (firstname.lastname@example.org) and our Communications Chair will get in you in touch with the right person.
Q. Hey, now that I joined, what's the time commitment like?
Well, it depends! You can be as heavily or as minimally involved as your schedule allows. Being a board member or part of the production and artistic team may require more time commitment. Many of our artistic team members are very involved and wear several different hats in just one production (maybe even literally!). For example, one person can serve as not only the Paint Designer, but also the Paint Crew Head and as a cast member.
If you're a cast or orchestra member, rehearsal times will vary from show to show and from part to part. Those in lead roles will have more rehearsals than members of the chorus. All cast members are required to be part of a Tech Crew team (Set, Paint, Costumes, Lights, or Props) and are assigned to one shortly after being cast. Cast members do have a say in which tech crew they are assigned.
If you would rather join us just to help out on a tech crew for a weekend or two, you are more than welcome. GGSS is a great part of the law school community, becuase we serve as an outlet for anyone, with any skill level, who wants to take a break from "real life". We also have parties every week of rehearsal and every night of show week for every production. All GGSS members, whether they are part of the production or not, are welcome to attend.
Q. What if I just want to go see the shows?
Wonderful! putting on a show wouldn't be much fun without audience members. Tickets usually go on sale two or three weeks prior to shows' run. You can purchase them right here on our website under the ticket section! Current Georgetown students and staff can purchase discounted tickets.
Q. What's this Board of Directors I keep hearing about?
Glad you asked! It can sound complicated becuase GGSS is a special theater group run by law students, but it's actually quite simple. Here is a flow chart that explains where everyone is in relation to the Board. Keep in mind that board members can also double up as a show designer, producer, stage manager, crew head, or cast member. The Board helps the group run smoothly and also acts as a buffer between the Georgetown Law school administration and the group. For more on what each board member does in the group, please review the GGSS Constitution and Bylaws.
